Caribbean with Simon Reeve: Part 1
The Caribbean Sea is a large vast sea with plentiful island spotted all throughout it. Christopher Columbus first landed on the island of Hispaniola in the year 1492. It was Christopher Columbus’ brother who was the first one who founded the first European city here. The city of Santo Domingo which is now the capital of the Dominican Republic. It is here in Santo Domingo is where European settlement in the Americas first started. “This was the first Spanish city in the Americas. It was home to the first European Cathedral, university, and monastery in the new world” (Caribbean with Simon Reeve: Part 1). It was from Santo Domingo that the Europeans set off to conquer the rest of the surrounding islands in the Caribbean. Today in the Dominican Republican, they have one of the fastest-growing economic growth in the region. The Dominican Republic is where most people go on vacation in the Caribbean. Over ten million people live in the Dominican Republic with over five million tourists visiting each year. Many of the Caribbean islands have become completely dependent on the tourist and travel industry. Over twenty-five million tourists travel to the Caribbean each year. Half of those people are from the United States.
I find it so curious that an entire area is now known more for its legacy rather than the actual area itself. While the area of Hispaniola, in the Dominican Republic is a beautiful and cultural place, it is more well know for its role in the history of the world. Christopher Columbus is such a fabled explorer and his exploration was crucial for the discovery and colonization of the western hemisphere. It would be interesting to truly see what the people there think of Columbus and how his legacy lasts locally.
ReplyDeleteI thought this documentary was interesting because we got to learn about different cultural backgrounds, and events that had taken place, as well as the struggles you wouldn't think a beautiful island like this would go through. It is viewed as a tourist place and is somewhere a lot of vacationers go and stay, therefore I would also be curious to know what the people living there think about Columbus and his bequest because of the impact it had on this island.
