The Discovery of Guiana

Sir Walter Raleigh was a knight, captain of her majesty’s guard, and held in high regard to the British Empire. The discovery of Guiana started on the sixths of February in 1595. The crew directed their ships in the direction of Trinidad. Once landed in Trinidad, they realized how important the land was for growing crops and holding animals. “the soil is very excellent, and will bear sugar, ginger, or any other commodity that the Indies yield. It hath store of deer, wild pork’s, fruit, fish, and fowl” (The Discovery of Guiana, Sir Walter Raleigh). Eventually, Sir Walter Raleigh started off to the empire of Guiana which is directly east from Peru towards the sea. It has been said that it has more gold than any other parts of Peru. “it hath more abundance of gold than any part of Peru, and as many or more great cities than ever Peru had when it flourished most” (The Discovery of Guiana, Sir Walter Raleigh). The empire of Guiana has the same laws, emperor, and religion as the rest of Peru. The Spaniards have been known to call this area El Dorado. They call it El Dorado for the greatness and riches located in this area. “All the vessels of his house, table, and kitchen, were of gold and silver, and the meanest of silver and copper for strength and hardness of the metal. He had in his wardrobe hollow statues of gold which seems giants, and the figures in proportion and bigness of all the beast, birds, trees, and herbs, that the earth bringeth forth” (The Discovery of Guiana, Sir Walter Raleigh). This is a first-hand account of the items that were in the house of an ancestor to the emperor of Guiana.

  2. The quote you selected was one of the more stronger ones of the passage because it talked about what travelers really looked for in land and how it could also benefit them in trade! Trade was a big focus in this passage and this quote was the introduction to everything that was important for the trade to continue on land and when traveling to other unsettled lands. What did you find the most interesting about everything we read?

  3. The soil based quote can be seen as the foundation for everything that was the lost colony or the first ever colonies in general. The soil and land was great for crops and planting. There was no shortage of land, resources, and water. Keep building on this.
